Obituary of Dr. Franklin Jackson Yager of Campbellsburg, KY
The following obituary originally appeared in the Henry County Local newspaper, New Castle, Kentucky, dated Friday, January 12, 1912:
Dr. Frank J. Yager died at his home at Campbellsburg Wednesday morning at 7:25 o'clock, from the infirmities of age, being 93 years, 8 months and 13 days old, having been born in Oldham County on April 27, 1818. Most of his life was spent in Henry County, and he was a regular practitioner of medicine for over 70 years - for he did practice up to within 18 months of his death.
Dr. Yager taught the first classes in Latin and Greek that were ever taught in Henry County, and some of his pupils became prominent. This instruction was given in 1840, at what was known as the Pollard school house between New Castle and Pleasureville. He opened the first Sunday school that was ever taught in La Grange; also the first one ever taught in Campbellsburg. He delivered the first temperance address that was ever delivered in that town and organized there the first society of the Sons of Temperance in Henry County.
During a great many years he was active in temperance and benevolent work, and was a conspicuous member of the Baptist church from his young manhood. He had for a great many years been a member of the Masonic fraternity and was devoted to the order.
Dr. Yager was a man of unusual intelligence and had a large fund of self-acquired knowledge. He was exceedingly kindly in disposition and the embodiment of courtesy.
In the successful practice of medicine, Dr. Yager built up a nice estate, but rather still, gained a wealth of public esteem.
Four children survive Dr. Yager: viz; Dr. Arthur Yager, President of Georgetown College; Mr. Fountain Yager, of California; Ernest Yager, of 648 First Street, Louisville; and Mrs. Lulu Milan, of Florida. Dr. Yager and Ernest reached his bedside the evening before he died.
The funeral occurred at Campbellsburg Thursday. The sermon was by Rev. G. J. Davis, Rev. Levi Chilton also making a short address. The honors of Masonry were also extended, Sup't Adams of the Orphan's Home, Louisville, officiating. There was a liberal turn-out of the fraternity.
The three sons were present, but the daughter us unable to come.

Family of Charles William Smith & Mary Sutton
While visiting Princeton, WV in 1995, I made contact with Mary Smith Steorts and her daughter, Sandra Steorts Chambers. Mrs. Steorts was the daughter of Ajax T. Smith. At the time, Mrs. Steorts was widowed and living in her daughter's home. I was invited into their home and had a wonderful visit. Mrs. Steorts gave me the following information on her grandfather, Charles William Smith and his family:
Charles William Smith (son of Theodore Smith and Eliza Jane French) was born in Willowton, West Virginia in 1852. Charles and his older brother Albert left WV about 1866 and moved to Kansas to work as farm hands. When he was old enough, Charles attended Crawford University in Indiana where he studied law under General Lew Wallace. [Wallace served a general for the Union Army during the Civil War. He later authored several books including the well-known Ben Hur: A Tale of the Christ. Wallace also served as territorial governor for New Mexico.] After Charles Smith earned his degree, he returned to Mercer County, West Virginia and began his own law practice. He served as a criminal court judge in Princeton from 1894 until 1901.
Charles married Mary S. Sutton on December 26, 1889 and they had four children. Mary was the daughter of Reverend John Sutton. Mary died in 1901. Charles later married Mary's younger sister, Nellie Sutton. There were no children from the second marriage.
Charles died in 1925. The family is buried in a family plot in Oakwood Cemetery in Princeton, WV.
The Children of Charles William Smith and Mary Sutton:
1. Ajax Telemon Smith (1890-1961) m. Edith Scott Smith
2. Frederic W. Smith (1893-1959) m. Leonora __________
3. Carl W. Smith (1896-1931) never married
4. Stanley Smith (no further information)
After leaving the home of Mrs. Steorts and Chambers, I visited Oakwood Cemetery and transcribed the following information from the tombstones:
Carl W. Smith, MD, born July 31, 1896, died September 1, 1931
Edith S. Smith, born July 13, 1890, died July 11, 1962 (wife of Ajax)
Ajax T. Smith, born September 25, 1890, died December 22, 1961

Obituary of Dr. Jacob Shrader Smith of Bellingham, Washington
I was surfing the web the other day and I came across an obituary of Dr. Jacob Shrader Smith of Bellingham, Washington. Dr. Smith is a descendant of Isaac Smith and Miss Simms (through his son Isaac Smith, Jr.). This obituary originally appeared in The Bellingham Herald on September 14, 1939:
Dr. Jacob S. Smith, 64, who retired as Whatcom County commissioner in January of this year, died at home early Thursday morning after a lingering illness. As a doctor, World War veteran and public officer, Dr. Smith became prominent during the thirty-six years of his residence here. He was born in Chapbellsburg, Kentucky, in 1875 of a pioneer family, son of Judge Jacob S. Smith of Henry County. He was graduated from the Louisville Medical College and took numerous post-graduate courses. As first lieutenant in the Medical Reserve Corps he saw active duty with the sanitary train of the Sixth division of the U.S. Army in France. At the time of his death he was a lieutenant colonel in the Medical Reserve Corps. Dr. Smith was a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars, a charter member of the Albert J. Hamilton Post of the American Legion, and past president of the Bellingham Rotary club.
In 1934 Dr. Smith became milk and meat inspector for the City of Bellingham and served in that position until he was elected county commissioner and while serving the city, he devoted much of his time to providing free medicine and hospitalization for under privileged citizens of the county. At one time he conducted the Bells Free Clinic and was instrumental in bringing about improved conditions in the county hospital. Dr. Smith worked hard for the building of a tuberculosis hospital in this county, but did not realize his ambition. Surviving relatives are the widow, Susan Rucker; a daughter, Mrs. Rogan Jones; a son Jacob Ladd; a daughter-in-law, a son-in-law, and four grandchildren, all of Bellingham, and a sister, Mrs. Lillie Chilton, of Campbellsburg, Kentucky. The remains are resting at the funeral home of Harlow-Hollingsworth where services are being arranged.
